Seats getting smaller or Americans getting fatter?

I am flying to Indianapolis today. I have not been on a plane in several months and it seems the seats are getting narrower or I am getting fatter. I never understood why people put up with the cramped conditions on airplanes. At one point it wasn’t this cramped, but seems the seats get smaller and Americans get fatter. Are the airlines secretly telling us that we must lose weight so we can fit in their planes or are they hope we get fatter so we have to buy more than seat?

It does not help that I asked for this 17” laptop and now I cannot open the screen all the way in my cramped coach seat. The screen size is great when the laptop is stilling on my desk or in the kitchen, but using it on a plane is almost ridiculous.

I have been looking into getting a Netbook, but I don’t know if I can deal with the cramped keyboard and screen. For my desktop computers I have always looked to by the largest screen possible and have become used to huge amount of real state a 22” monitor can provide.

I would be great of companies could make Netbooks with 13” monitors. It seems companies to sacrifice weight for extra battery life and a larger screen.
